Response to the Disaster

The State responded systematically to the disaster. The National Disaster Preparedness Central Committee established in 2005 after the Indian Ocean Tsunami conducted damage assessment in the affected areas and assigned departments concerned to take immediate action for the reconstruction.

International and local donors contributed cash and emergency relief supplies including temporary shelters, food, water treatment plants, etc., for the victims. Entrepreneurs, while struggling to revive their businesses stagnated by the storm, actively participated in the relief and rehabilitation work.

The caring and sharing nature of Myanmar nationals became more apparent in post-Nargis period. Such incidents as victims helping less fortunate victims and victims sharing what was left of them with fellow victims in their time of mutual need paint a vivid picture of typical Myanmar mindset.
